Dressing for cold weather

When the temperaure drops, you can still get workout outside. Just make sure you're dressed for the occassion. These dressing tips also apply to those of you that work outside.

  • Dress in layers - This allows you to remove layers as you start to sweat, and put them back on as you cool off. The layer closest to your skin should be made of a synthetic material, like polypropelene, that wicks moisture away from your body.
  • Remember your extremities - Be sure to protect your hands, feet and ears. These areas are vulnerable to frostbite, but wearing gloves, warm socks and a hat or ear warmer can help protect them. If it;s really cold, also consider wearing a neck gaiter or a scarf to protect your neck and face.
  • Watch the weather - This sounds simple, but weather factors like precipitation and wind chill can affect how hard your body has to work to stay warm. You might need to make adjustments to your layers - adding a wind or waterproof outer layer - to stay safe and comfortable outside.
  • Remember safety gear - If you're exercising outside when it's dark, choose a reflective outer layer. Make sure your footwear has enough traction for what you are doing.

Fitting in Fitness

As the new year starts, many of us make resolutions to get fit. We may start of with a bang, but a lot of us fizzle out as the year goes on. Follow these tips to help you make time for fitness throughout the year.

At home

  • Wake up early - Getting up a half hour early can give you time to fit in a walk around your nieghborhood.
  • Get active while watching tv - Watch your favorite show while walking on a treadmill. You can also do "commercial workouts." Instead of skipping through those commercials, use that time to do exercises like jumping jacks, sit ups, push ups or chair dips.
  • Involve the family - Trying going on a family walk after dinner, or have everyone go along when you walk the dog.

At work

  • Take the stairs - Skip the elevator. If it's too many flights for you to walk the whole way, try getting off the elevator a few floors early.
  • Take fitness breaks - Instead of hanging out at the water cooler on your break, grab your water bottle and walk around the block. You'll get some exercise and it can help refresh your mind.
  • Add it to your calendar - Schedule fitness just like any other meeting or appointment.

More tips

  • Skip front row parking - When your at the mall or grocery store, park toward the back of the lot to sneak in extra steps in your day.
  • Join a fitness club or sports team - It's easier to work out when you're meeting friends. If you like group exercise - try out a fitness club, most offer a free pass for you to try out a class. Maybe you're more into sports? Check with your local parks and recreation department or YMCA to see what sports leauges are available in your area. Softball, soccer, volleyball and even dodgeball leauges are commonly available.
