Colonial Springs now offering latest in hand and leg therapy

State of the art hand and leg therapy at Colonial Springs Healthcare Facility

Bioness TreatmentColonial Springs Healthcare Center in Buffalo is now offering the BIONESS NESS H200 and L300 rehabilitation treatment system. The H200 and L300 are innovative functional electrical stimulation (FES) systems that help patients recover from stroke, traumatic brain injury, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy and incomplete spinal cord injury to regain muscle control, providing more function, freedom and a better life. CSHCC is the only long-term care facility in Missouri offering both treatments in for the inpatient and outpatient setting.

"We are excited to be among a select group of facilities in the country to offer these treatment systems. The NESS H200 and NESS L300 accelerate and compliment traditional therapy. By adopting the NESS H200 and NESS L300, we hope to maximize patient rehabilitation," says Ellis Hall, director of outpatient rehabilitation at CMH.

The NESS H200 is a hand rehabilitation system that has been shown to facilitate the return of hand function in patients in the acute phase of recovery following stroke and brain injury, as well as select patients with older injuries. Consisting of a soft polymer and five surface electrodes, the H200 fits over the patients hand like a glove and, on command, stimulates the muscles to either extend or flex the hand. Exercises can be customized for each patient.

The NESS L300 is the first wireless FES system that is low profile and lightweight. The system consists of three components: a gait sensor worn in the shoe, a wireless stimulating leg cuff worn below the knee and a clinician-programmed control unit. When the gait sensor detects "heel off," it sends a message to the leg cuff, which then stimulates the leg muscles to lift the foot accordingly. This allows patients to achieve a more-normalized gait on changing terrains and varying speeds.

Bioness Leg Treatment"We endorse both the H200 and L300 because they are easy for patients to use and easy for our therapists to use. They are programmable, can be used on multiple patients and are designed for patient compliance," says Hall.

CSHCC is a Medicare/Medicaid licensed skilled-nursing care center specializing in long and short-term stays, independent living apartments, a special care unit for those with Alzheimer's disease or other dementias  and in and outpatient physical, occupational and speech therapy.
