CMH to host annual ‘Pink Bag Luncheon’ Oct. 7

Sometimes we all need a reminder to take care of ourselves. Life can be so busy; we forget to do the things that can keep us healthy. That is why Citizens Memorial Healthcare (CMH), the Carrie J. Babb Cancer Center at CMH and Central Care Cancer are highlighting the month of October as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Area women are invited to attend a special Pink Bag Luncheon on Oct. 7. The luncheon will be held in the CMH Community Rooms from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the cost of the luncheon is $7.  Angelica Varga, PA-C, and Terry Pratt, RN, MSN, FNP-C, both with Central Care Cancer, will be the guest speakers.  Varga and Pratt will provide information on breast cancer awareness including mammograms and self exams as well as the latest information on treatments and medical procedures.  Tamara Wilfong, American Cancer Society (ACS), will present information on resources available at ACS for patients and families impacted by cancer.

“The cancer program at CMH has grown to become one of the most respected cancer treatment facilities in the area,” said Robert McMillan, director of oncology support at CMH.  “We offer coordinated inpatient and outpatient programs to help prevent, detect, diagnose, treat and eradicate cancer.”

CMH provides comprehensive, state-of-the-art diagnostic and therapeutic cancer care.  The medical staff at CMH – surgeons, pathologists, radiologists, medical and radiation oncologists – is specially trained in the diagnostic and therapeutic aspects of cancer care.

In addition to medical oncology, hematology and radiation oncology, support services are available at the Carrie J. Babb Cancer Center. These include social services, nutritional services, massage therapy, breast prosthetic fittings, patient library, support groups and a variety of programs such as Look Good Feel Better, Reach to Recovery and others provided by the ACS. CMH also offers the Women’s Services Center  featuring digital mammography and Dexa scan bone loss equipment.  Certified lymphedema therapists at CMH Outpatient Therapy and Occupational Health Services located in the Douglas Medical Center, are available to assess and treat patients with lymphedema using complete decongestive therapy.

Special breast cancer awareness T-shirts will be sold at the luncheon for $12.  T-shirts can also be purchased at the Carrie J. Babb Cancer Center Library Monday – Friday from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. throughout the month of October. Proceeds from the T-shirt sales support programs and services at the Cancer Center. The Carrie J. Babb Cancer Center is located at 1501 N. Oakland, Bolivar.
