Miles for Smiles began in 1999 with a one-chair mobile dental unit that provided dental services to the underserved or uninsured children in five counties. After obtaining a grant from the Missouri Foundation of Health, a fully equipped two-chair RV was purchased and the program now provides dental services for children in 11 southwest Missouri counties, seven of which have no dentist in the county who will accept Medicaid children in their practice. Working in conjunction with the schools and health departments in those counties, Miles for Smiles sets-up at their locations providing convenience for the students and parents. More than 42,000 children have been seen and treated by Miles for Smiles.
