Project will add 80,000 square feet to Douglas Medical Center
Citizens Memorial Healthcare Foundation will begin construction in a few days on a two-story 80,000-square-foot addition to the Kerry and Synda Douglas Medical Center, located at 1155 W. Parkview St., Bolivar. When complete, the facility will expand to nearly 120,000 square feet of space.
Groundbreaking on the project will be held Wednesday, March 13 at 1 p.m.
“The new project is expected to cost $18.2 million,” says Donald J. Babb, CEO of Citizens Memorial Hospital and Executive Director of Citizens Memorial Healthcare Foundation. Funding for the construction of the project is coming from a loan from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Dewitt & Associates, Inc. were selected as the construction manager for the project. The project is expected to take 15 to 17 months to complete.
“We are excited not only for the additional medical office space this building will provide, but the expansion of the ambulatory surgical area as well,” says Babb. “In the surgical area, four new surgical suites will be created; an additional new endoscopic lab and the pre- and post-op area will be remodeled in the existing Ambulatory Surgical Center.”
The new facility will also house a new Imaging Center that will include an MRI and PET/CT and the newly expanded Women’s Center.
“We are thrilled about the new facility. The space has been designed so that our patients will be able to receive all of the imaging studies that they may need—mammography, ultrasound and even biopsy--in the same area. It will be private and comfortable for patients and will be a good workspace for us. We are already proud of the service that we provide at the Women’s Center, but the new facility will take us to the next level,” says Jana Horner, M.D., board certified radiologist with CMH Women's Center.
“It will be a great convenience to women for the Women’s Center to be located in the same facility with state-of-the-art equipment of the Imaging Center,” says Babb.
Also located in the facility will be CMH Surgical Services and CMH Wound and Hyperbaric Center, which is currently in the Professional Building. The clinics will be located on the first floor of the expansion and will be conveniently located next to the expanded surgical area, endoscopic area, Women’s Center, Imaging Center and Infusion Center.
“Having surgeons steps away from the surgery suites, endoscopic suites and radiology will create a better patient experience and better response time for patients as well,” says Babb. “The hyperbaric chambers will also be moved to a more spacious area in the expanded clinic space, allowing for future expansion when needed.”
According to Babb, patients will really appreciate the new entrance and patient-friendly registration area, which will be on the first floor and will be located immediately as a patient enters the building. Also planned in the expansion is a coffee shop on the first floor and a cafeteria on the second floor for families of patients, and employees.
“The new facility is designed with the patient experience in mind,” says Babb. “We understand that patients and their families may spend a lot of time with us as they use our health care services. We want them to have an excellent experience -- from our medical and nursing staff to our modern facilities. We want to ensure that the patient needs come first, and we are building this facility with that in mind.”
The second floor of the medical office building expansion will have space for six new specialty physicians. The lower level of the building will house the Information Services Department, which is currently located in several buildings across Bolivar. The IS Department will include training rooms, a repair area, data room and offices for staff.
