CMH to host Diabetes Education Fair March 29

Nearly 25.8 million Americans have diabetes and the number grows daily.  Learn about diabetes prevention and management at the Diabetes Education Fair March 29 from 9 a.m. to noon in the community rooms located at Citizens Memorial Healthcare (CMH) in Bolivar. The free educational health fair will include talks by experts in the field of diabetes care and vendors displaying the latest in diabetes management products.

Jessica Miller, a certified diabetes educator and registered dietitian at CMH, calls diabetes “an epidemic.”  “Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin – the hormone needed to convert sugar, starches and other food into energy for daily living,” says Miller. “The Diabetes Education Fair is a way for CMH to help educate the growing number of diabetics in southern Missouri about the evolving disease and what new help is available.  It will provide patients with self-management tips and techniques,” she says.

The Diabetes Education Fair will include:

  • 9 a.m. - noon  Information booths open.  Blood screenings offered at CMH cost.  (CMH does not file insurance.  Cash and check will be accepted at the event.  A lipid panel measuring the amount of cholesterol and triglycerides is available for $25.  A comprehensive metabolic panel (CMP) includes testing for glucose, calcium, electrolytes and liver function for $20.  Men may receive a Prostate Cancer (PSA) test for $30.  A Thyroid Profile (TSH + FT4) test is available for $30, a Complete Blood Count (CBC) test for $15, Protime (Pt) and INR test for $20 and a Hemoglobin AIC test is available for $20.  Fasting is required for accurate results.  Results are mailed in approximately 10 working days.)
  • 10 – 10:30 a.m.  “Managing Diabetes – What to Expect” with CMH Diabetes Education
  • 10:45 – 11:15 a.m.  Healthy cooking advice and demonstration from CMH Nutritional Services
  • 11:30 a.m. - noon CMH Senior Health Center shares exercise tips and techniques
