Bolivar OB/GYN Implements Electronic Medical Record
New system will streamline care, move clinic toward Meaningful Use
The staff at Bolivar OB/GYN have recently implemented an Electronic Medical Record as required by the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act. Among the benefits are electronically ordered tests and medications, which have been proven safer than hand written orders or prescriptions.
"The conversion from paper charts to electronic medical records has been an extensive learning experience for everyone in the office,“ stated Debra Volcko, who managed the conversion. “We know it will benefit our patients as we move forward in assisting us with providing the very best care available. We appreciate the understanding and patience of our patients during this transition. One immediate benefit is the ability of several clinicians to work in the patient’s record at the same time. A nurse can be entering the patient’s history or vital signs while the provider is entering an order.”
This implementation creates a foundation that will allow orders to flow to the radiology department at CMH, which will allow Dr. Burlison, Dr. Meents and Kelly Raney, WHNP to receive their patient’s test results as quickly as possible. Bolivar OB/GYN and CMH are a part of the Infocare Network, a collaborative group of healthcare providers in this area benefiting from a Rural Health Information Technology Network Development Grant to assist in expanding health information technology in rural areas.
